RV VACATION FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Ready for a vacation you will remember for a lifetime? Before you head out, make sure to prepare for your trip. Below are some handy tips and answers to some frequently asked questions  that will help make your RV vacation even better! Now hop in your RV and get moving

Why rent an RV?
Many people rent an RV simply for the freedom and flexibility that comes along with being able to come and go as you please and travel at your leisure to your selected destinations.

What to rent?
You can easily choose the RV that is right for you by going to our “View Motorhomes to Rent” page where you can see the exterior view, the floor plan or take a virtual tour of the interior.  For more detailed information on how to determine which RV will work for your personal needs you can visit (Link to “Advantages of RV Travel Page)

Do I need a special drivers license?
If you are an experienced car driver, you have the skills necessary to drive an RV.  Motorhomes do not require commercial drivers license for personal use.  The automatic transmission, power brakes and steering you are accustomed to are standard features on most RV’s.

Who can drive the RV?
The requirements of eligible drivers are that they be 25 years of age, have a valid drivers license and be and insurable driver (must have proof of insurance).  The person who rents the motorhome is the responsible party but you can also add drivers to your contract for $10.00 per additional driver, as long as the drivers you add meet the eligibility requirements.

How do I insure the RV?
Access RV  provides one of three options to our customers regarding insurance while renting the Motorhome...

1. * Commercial Rental Insurance is included in the rental price and carries a $2,000 deductible for damages. We will do a $2,000.00 “Authorization Only” on your Credit Card at the time of pick up and when the motorhome is returned with no damage it will expire off of your Credit Card.
2. * CDR Insurance is also our standard Commercial Rental Insurance but this option allows you to pay $29.50 per day and lowers the deductible from $2,000.00 to $600.00 .  The same “Pre-Authorization” applies for this deposit
3.   Self Insure Many Insurance Companies will issue “Binders” to their Insured which extends your existing coverage to the Motorhome.  This must be Full Coverage Insurance and name Access RV as an “Additional Insured”.  There will be a $500.00 “Pre-Authorization” for the  Security deposit at time of pick up.
*Keep in mind that Access RV’s Insurance does not cover Overhead, Back-up or under carriage Damage to the vehicle.

Are RV’s difficult to drive?
Driving an RV is not difficult it is just different.  With the proper attention to those differences you will find it fun and easy to take the wheel.  The major differences between driving a car and driving a Motorhome are:
Height:  Motorhomes have a  clearance height of about 12 feet so you need to be mindful of obstacles such as service station canopies, bridge heights, car washes or low hanging obstacles such as tree branches.
Length & Weight: The additional length and weight of the vehicle makes it less maneuverable than a passenger vehicle. When attempting to park or to backup, you should always make sure you have the extra room you will need and have a spotter. Remember that because of the weight of the RV it may not stop as quickly so you will need more following distance. Defensive driving in an RV requires making changes slowly and carefully , braking gradually and getting familiar with it handling characteristics.

What is the difference between a Class A and Class C Motorhome?
A quick way to tell the difference between a Class A and Class C motorhome is by physical appearance. A Class A resembles a bus in design with a "flat" or vertical front end and large windows. Class C motorhomes by contrast have a “Truck cab" with an over-cab bed, much like a camper.
Class A motorhomes come with every luxury. A kitchen, bathroom with shower,  a separate bedroom in the back, heating and air conditioning, 100-125 volt Electrical system,  kitchen and dinette or living room area with couch, closets, and an entertainment center which includes TV/DVD Player and CD Player..
Class C motorhomes are generally constructed on cutaway chassis depending on the model. The cab is similar to a truck, with a bunk above, plus a rear bedroom. Like the Class A, Class C motorhomes have all the conveniences of home including kitchen, bathroom, dinette, heating, A/C, and entertainment features.  Also for more detailed information you can visit (link to “Advantages of RV Travel” Page)

What kind of gas mileage should I expect?
Our motorhomes have gas tanks that range from 55 gallons for Class C Motorhomes to 75 gallons for Class A Motorhomes. They will generally average between 7and 12 M.P.G.

What size are the holding tanks on the RV?
There are 3 different holding tanks on our motorhomes and travel trailers.  There is the Fresh Water Tank, the Grey Water Tank (sink & shower waste water), and the Black Water Tank (toilet waste water).  The size of the holding tanks varies with the size of the motorhome or travel trailer. Each vehicle  has a convenient “at a glance” monitoring panel so that you can check the levels of the tanks to see when you should refresh  them. To learn more about the size of the holding tanks you can visit (link to “Advantages of RV Travel” Page)

Where can we dump the RV?
There are many locations that have dump stations for RV travelers.  Some of the likely places to find one would be in the RV Park that you are staying, or a  “Truck Stop” type gas station.  It is usually very easy to find a facility that has a dump station.  They are located all across the United States and are usually very convenient.

Where Can we park the RV?
There are tons of beautiful places for you to stay in an RV.  Wherever you choose to go you can make sure that the RV park meets your and your families needs by doing a little research first.  Most RV Parks are very “Family Friendly” and offer a lot of amenities and lovely surroundings. You can visit our “Trip Planning” page for suggestions on routes, activities and RV Parks, also there are a couple of very good sites for you to visit when you are looking for the right place to stay,  www.rvparkhunter.com and www.koa.com ,. Both of these sites offer complete descriptions and photos of the Park, excellent information on amenities, rates, dates of operation, number of RV sites the park has, and any discounts that may be available.  It is always a good idea to make your reservations as far in advance as you can to ensure that you get the spot that you and your family will love!
Dry camping is another option and  involves using your RV without hook-ups: no electricity, water or sewer connections. This camping fully utilizes all of the systems included with your unit. Many consider dry camping to be the ideal, as you don't need to be parked in an RV Park with full hook-ups to enjoy all the comforts of your RV.
Available water is what you have in your freshwater holding tank. If used sparingly, and depending on how much you start with, your supply will usually last several days. Waste water is stored in either the grey (sink) or black (sewage) holding tank. *Dedicated housebatteries that are independent of the engine batteries provide power to operate your water heater and water pump for those hot showers. The house batteries also provide power to many interior lights, pumps and motors, although depending on the conditions, the batteries will only stay fully charged for 2 to 3 days at a time. Propane provides the fuel needed to operate furnace, refrigerator, oven and stove top and water heater, ensuring you stay warm, your food stays cold and you can cook a gourmet meal.  Appliances such as TV, air conditioning, microwave and coffee maker usually require 110-volt electricity that the house batteries alone cannot provide, necessitating the use of the generator when dry camping.
*It is always recommended to plug in to shore power as much as possible due to limited battery capacity.

When can I Pick up or Drop off the RV?
*Deliveries can be scheduled between the hours of 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Returns must be done between 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.. What last minute preparations should I make?

Before you arrive at Access Rv to begin your RV Adventure, here are a few suggestions on some last minute things to check to make sure that your trip will be as problem free as possible.

Notify Credit Cards
When you are traveling out of your home state or country it is always a good idea to notify your Credit Card company so that you will  not encounter any problems trying to use your card while on the road. Often times the Credit Card company, in trying to ensure your card is not being used inappropriately, will deny charges to customers if they have not made this notification.

Insurance
If you are insuring your RV with a binder from your insurance company, check with them and make sure that they have indeed issued a binder and sent the information to us.

If you are purchasing insurance from Access Rv, make sure that you have your insurance card with you when you arrive for check-out.

Arrival Information
Access RV has a complimentary shuttle service from the airport or Hotel to our facility.  Make sure to confirm that we have the correct Airline and flight arrival time for you, or if you are arriving before your date of check-out, that we have the name and address of the hotel you will be staying at so that we will be able to pick you up in a timely manner.

Weather Information
It may be helpful to check the weather ahead of time for the dates you have scheduled your trip to ensure that you pack the proper items you will need, or unpack those that you don’t!

Accessories
It is also a good idea to check with us beforehand to  make sure that we have all of the accessories you ordered included in your rental contract.  Accessories may sometimes be in short supply, depending on the time of year, so make sure you order them early!
